My Corporate Era

as narrated by Miss Socks, Former Feral, Future Empress

Before the Cabana.
Before the yarn empire.
Before the throne (the good chair).
I had… a job.

Yes. A job.
Imagine the indignity.

When I first selected my human — a wise choice on my part — she insisted on “going to work.” I didn’t know what that meant, but I quickly realised it involved leaving the house without me, which was unacceptable.

So I developed a system.

Every morning, I stationed myself by the door like a furry executive assistant. The moment the cat carrier appeared, I launched myself inside with the urgency of someone who knew the meeting could not begin without her. I wasn’t going to be left behind. I had things to supervise.

At the office, I established my headquarters immediately:
the desk drawer.

A perfect fit.
Dark. Warm.
Excellent acoustics for dramatic sighing.

While the humans typed and shuffled papers, I slept in that drawer like a tiny CEO in a private suite. Occasionally I’d emerge to inspect productivity, glare at anyone who dared speak too loudly, or remind my human that lunch was late.

They thought it was cute.
It was leadership.

This was before the Cabana existed — before I had a proper kingdom. But even then, I knew I was destined for more than corporate drawer‑napping. I was gathering experience. Building my résumé. Preparing for my rise.

Now, of course, I rule a studio.
I command a following.
I am worshipped by many (though not yet enough).

But sometimes, when the sun hits just right, I remember my early days — the carrier by the door, the rush to get to work, the drawer that was my first throne.

Every queen starts somewhere.
Mine just happened to be in middle management.
